The Contract, also called a "service Contract,"[1] is the legal document which governs a kandra's life. It binds a kandra to the contract holder, requiring absolute obedience.[2] The only exception is that, under the Contract, a kandra cannot be required to kill[3] a human[4] or to reveal the secrets of the kandra people.[5]

No kandra is allowed into human society without a Contract.[6] If a kandra's Contract holder dies before the Contract is completed, that kandra is required to return to the Kandra Homeland immediately.[7] They are allowed only very occasional brief periods without a Contract; during these periods, they must remain in the Homeland.[8]

The Contract is based on the First Contract,[9] made between the kandra people and the Lord Ruler, who they call "The Father."[10] It was created initially to stop allomancers hunting and killing kandra.[11] Both KanPaar of the Second Generation and TenSoon of the Third Generation were involved in writing the model service Contracts.[12] Since kandra are not considered adults for at least a generation (and possibly for two generations),[13] the service Contracts must have been created during the fourth century after the collapse (the time of the Fourth Generation) or later.
